Under the federal No Surprises Act, patients who are uninsured or not using insurance generally have the right to a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges for scheduled, non-emergency healthcare services.
What Is a Good Faith Estimate?
A Good Faith Estimate explains expected charges for eligible items and services before care is provided. It may include related items and services reasonably expected in connection with the scheduled care.
Your Rights
- You can request a Good Faith Estimate before scheduling an eligible service.
- You generally have the right to receive a written estimate when scheduling eligible non-emergency services, within the timeframes established by federal law.
- If a bill from a provider or facility is at least $400 more than that provider or facility’s Good Faith Estimate, you may qualify for the federal patient-provider dispute resolution process.
- Keep a copy or photograph of your estimate for your records.
